Learning Tai Chi Means Never Having to Say, You're SorryMany times with a new student when I correct their form or posture, they respond with “I'm sorry”. Lways tell them that “thank you is the more proper response”. I ask them have you ever gotten lost in Boston or Santa Fe or some other strange city and had to ask for directions? Did you apologize to the person who kind enough to get you back on the right track? Whether the directions are make a right on Galisteo Road or turn left at the Citgo sign the appropriate response always is “thank you”. Well this is also true when your Sifu helps you to get your Tai Chi on the right track. Sometimes, I grow a little sad when a student apologizes to me when I offer him/her corrections; and then I wonder what teacher, coach or other mentor in their past dressed them down for not getting something perfect the first, second or even third try.
Corrections and criticism are two different things. Corrections are an attempt to help you improve your performance or technique in whatever art or activity you're involved in.
Criticism is a negative value judgment about you and the expression of disapproval of you or something about you based on their perception of your faults or mistakes. The former is an attempt to help and the latter is stating a dislike and rejecting something about about you. Unfortunately, many of us have received criticism when we needed correction. When I'm teaching I feel that a student apologizing to me after a correction is almost a symptom of a mild form of PTSD and the result of overly critical mentors from probably sometime during their early childhood. So remember when receiving corrections in your Tai Chi class it is not criticism, but an attempt to help you get more benefits from your practice.
When you come to Tai Chi class you're like the person who has stopped to ask directions and your Sifu is person helping you get back on the right track. So the appropriate response when receiving corrections from your Sifu is, “thank you' and not “I'm sorry”.
Because learning Tai Chi means never having to say that you're sorry.
